In fabrication, what is the term for a point where inspection and acceptance are required before fabrication can proceed?

Go-ahead

Hold

A hold point is a control checkpoint in fabrication where work must be inspected and formally accepted before any further steps can proceed. This ensures that materials, welds, dimensions, and procedures meet the project’s specifications before more work is built on top of them. In practice, the hold point is defined in the QA/QC plan or welding procedure, and inspectors verify the required criteria, sometimes including nondestructive testing or dimensional checks. Only after the inspection is approved is the hold released and fabrication allowed to continue. If issues are found, work is paused and corrective actions are taken before moving on. This concept is different from a go-ahead (which is simply permission to proceed after a hold is cleared) and from a release (which may refer to freeing items from quarantine or from a hold) or a general check (which is a routine verification that doesn’t by itself constitute a formal hold).
